ALS -- Notes
HN discussion inspired me to look at ALS a little.
In contrast, Cystic Fibrosis is a defect in trafficking of sodium and related stuff -- primarily sodium chloride (aka "salt") and sodium bicarbonate ("baking soda" -- an alkaline substance) -- into and out of the cell. In CF, the defective channel is in the cell membrane -- called the cell wall if you are a plant instead of an animal.
Defects in the myelin sheath cause neurological issues and myelin is fatty.
I would look there for answers if it were ME.
But also, seems to involve the Golgi, similar to muscular dystrophy. So I would have a muscular dystrophy expert look at this.
- SOME cases are known to have a genetic factor.
- The most common known allele involved in ALS
- Likely function: Studies have provided some evidence to confirm this: C9ORF72 was found to regulate endosomal trafficking and autophagy in neuronal cells and primary neurons.
- Endocytic Pathways and Endosomal Trafficking: A Primer
- Endosome
- Golgi complex organization in skeletal muscle: a role for Golgi-mediated glycosylation in muscular dystrophies?
