The Hot Zone

A zillion years ago, I read a book called The Hot Zone -- available online for free -- about true tales of dealing with deadly viruses, many or maybe most of which came out of Africa. Some of the stories were about Ebola.

I really, really liked the stories about Ebola. It made a HUGE impression on me because "western" medicine FAILED to stop the Ebola epidemic.

What stopped it was NOT medicine at all. It was the actions of local tribal leaders who blockaded the roads and refused entry to non-locals, told their people do NOT go to the "white man's hospital" (because you went with something fixable, like a broken leg, and DIED of Ebola), quarantined the infected in their huts -- leaving food at the door for them -- and burned the huts down if three days worth of food accumulated at the door.

So if you are dealing with an epidemic, quarantine WORKS.

I wonder if you could up your game by using some locally available antivirals. (See also: More Antivirals)

Pedantic minor detail: I tweeted about this November 6th. Just tidying the info up and trying to make it a little more organized.
